Fall, Fashion, and other Things

There's a palpable energy to fall. It's electric. The earth is shifting and moving in her seasons and with it bores evidence. The leaves warm to gold and hues of rust. The twilight hour draws itself around us earlier and earlier, like an old familiar blanket come to life. A crispness hangs in the air. Women everywhere rejoice in the return of the PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte) and revel in the manic creation of pumpkin spice themed EVERYTHING. It's truly an enchanting time of year.

When I think about autumnal garb I always gravitate to the colors of the season.

If I can look like a walking Pumpkin Spice Latte, I have achieved my goal.

I'm loving (and have always loved) the caramel tones, deep browns, and burnt oranges of fall fashion.

For this shoot I donned a floor length Forever21 suede dress and matching suede mules with laces. Despite nearly falling down in my mules (hey mother earth is uneven!), the rest of the outfit felt very natural amidst the Palomar Mountain backdrop. Even in the picture above, the brown of the dress seems to compliment the emerald moss to the left.

Another reason I covet fall is the cozy vibes that ensue once the temperature drops and the night creeps in faster. It's a reason to reach for a hot cup of something and your favorite blanket. Don't you just love the weight of a blanket? It's so soothing to me. Pair it with a pumpkin spice creamer drenched coffee and I'm in heaven.

This particular blanket weighs more than you might think. It weighs with memories and nostalgia. In my pre-teen years I would make regular trips to the Smoky Mountains with my family. We loved the serpent roads that twisted through the tree laden hills. We loved the Cherokee Indian Reservation that stands nestled in the valley along a clear, stony bottomed river. We loved it most in the fall when the forest burst with brilliant gold and took your breath away. We loved it all so much that we eventually built a cabin atop a lonely little mountain peak.

This style blanket could be found for sale throughout the Indian Reservation. This one was soft and I instantly felt connected to the purple hues woven throughout (at the time purple was my favorite color. Having a favorite color was important in middle school. You had to know it, because someone might ask).

It quickly became mine and despite my family having several of these blankets I fiercely ensured my softer blanket did not end up swapped for a scratchier, lesser version. All through middle school and high school this blanket sat in my room, often times unnoticed as I giggled with my friends about what had happened earlier that week at school or cried alone about some boy that broke my heart. But it was there.

And its presence was a soft reminder that there is a beautiful place in the mountains where a river runs clear and quiet and the trees stretch past your head and all the worries that could come out of it.

That place is still there, the most lovely of havens, and the most glorious in the fall. This fall fashion shoot at Palomar Mountain took me back to that place.

Now that I'm a San Diegan I can't say I'll ever visit that place again. It's a tedious journey, requiring plane rides and car rentals. Maybe one day I'll return.

If I do, it will be in the fall.

Cheers to fall! What are you most looking forward to about the season? Does anyone have a particular fall fashion trend they love to rock or a scrumptious fall recipe? I'm all ears, comment below.
